Pastoral Care & Support in Spondon
At Spondon Methodist Church, pastoral care in Spondon has deep roots. Over 300 years ago, John and Charles Wesley established a “Class” system—small groups where everyone found mutual support, encouragement, and fellowship. That legacy continues today as we strive to be a truly caring church community in Derby.
When you become a member of our church, both you and your family are paired with a pastoral visitor. Their role is to pray regularly for those in their care, share in your joys, offer comfort in times of sorrow, and support you in moments of need. If you attend regularly but haven’t yet become a member, you’ll still receive pastoral care: we believe everyone deserves prayer, support and belonging.
Nurture & Faith Growth
A key part of our mission is to grow together as disciples of Jesus Christ. To make that a reality, we offer several Christian nurture opportunities right here in Spondon:
- Disciple Course: A structured journey helping people deepen their faith.
- Small Bible Study Groups: Meet mid-week or weekly to dig into scripture, explore questions, and build supportive friendships.
- “Step Forward” Discussion Group: Groups of 8-12 people working through four sessions, each with Welcome, Worship, Word and Witness. After each section, there’s a social gathering to celebrate together.
Whether you’re new to Christian faith or wanting to grow more, everyone is welcome to join one of our existing groups — or, if you prefer, to help form a new one.
Prayer at the Heart of Our Church
Prayer is central to Christian life — our way of speaking with God and listening to His voice. At Spondon Methodist Church we encourage many types of prayer and are committed to being a place of prayer support in the Spondon community.
We offer:
- Weekly Prayer Meeting every Sunday morning, 10:00-10:30 am, just before the main worship service.
- Prayer Chain: a confidential group offering targeted prayer support for needs, whether by church members or in the wider community.
- 24-Hour Prayer Vigil: at least once a year, devoted time of continuous prayer and intercession.
- Street Prayer: outreach into local streets, praying for households, neighbours, and community needs.
We practice many styles: quiet meditation, spoken prayer, listening, prayer with music and more. In all these, whether bringing personal situations, guidance for the church, or healing, we seek to connect with God together.
